MAGNOLIA, Texas -- Steve Aycock, who captained the 1971 Oklahoma football team that played Nebraska in the Game of the Century, died last Friday on his birthday. He was 53.

Aycock, from Midland, Texas, was a two-time All-Big Eight linebacker, 1970-71.

"He was a very good player, tough kid," said former OU assistant coach Don Jimerson. "Flew to the football. Very knowledgeable, very intelligent."

Aycock came to OU in 1968 in the great recruiting class that included Jack Mildren, Roy Bell, John Shelley, Glen King and his Midland High School teammate Steve O'Shaughnessy.

Aycock had 175 tackles in 1970, still the third-best in OU history for linebackers. He had 133 tackles as a senior in 1971.

Aycock is survived by his wife, Renda, and five children: Robert "Bo" McCall Aycock, Stephanie Michelle Aycock, Brett Aaron Aycock, Nicole Marie Aycock and Ashley Anne Aycock.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in Houston at the Chapel of J.B. Earthman, Tanglewood Funeral Directors, and at 2 p.m. next Tuesday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Midland.
